Australia's eastern regions are bracing for more heavy rain and the possibility of "life-threatening" floods as the country experiences a third consecutive La Niña weather event. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings of severe flooding in parts of New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria, with the potential for dangerous flash floods. In NSW, areas previously devastated by floods in March, such as the Northern Rivers region, are at high risk. The flood warnings in both states have prompted evacuations and emergency responses, and numerous flood warnings are in place.

The current flooding has already claimed lives, prompted a significant number of assistance requests, and required the rescue of hundreds of individuals. The Australian Defence Force has been deployed to aid in the affected areas. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged continued support for the affected states, highlighting the government's commitment to assisting those most affected by the floods. However, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has cautioned that the widespread floods are expected to impact the country's economic growth and potentially contribute to increased inflation.
